Sound therapy is a process used by therapists to help treat some of their patients suffering from sleep disorders, PTSD, anxiety, depression, epilepsy, chronic pain, ADD/ADHD, and autism. Sound therapy covers a range of treatments, from music therapy to sound baths, as it is a form of sensory therapy. The goal of sound therapy is balance and restoration. This treatment brings many emotions to the surface, so sound therapy can look different for anyone. This may look like crying, laughing, feeling angry, or feeling euphoric.
Sound therapy works through sound waves and vibrations. The vibrations work by “massaging every cell in the body”, and most of the healing one experiences is through their own making.
With sound therapy being a solution for many types of mental illnesses and disorders, it has been seen as very beneficial. Though it may not be for everyone, there are still many ways to try sound therapy if you are interested. Most cities, big and small, offer at least one sound therapy center. Yoga studios are also starting to adopt this practice. Be sure to also reach out to your insurance provider to see if sound therapy is covered.
